Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars plot

Can the life of guitar god Eric Clapton, with its many ups and downs, be summarized in just over two hours? Eric Clapton: Life in 12 Bars proves it, focusing on his early days. In the sixties he played successively with The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and super trio Cream. The popularity of his blues-shaped style brought black musicians, especially in America, into acceptance. They were also the years when the inscription 'Clapton is God' was chalked on walls. This film, composed entirely of archive material, examines both his musical career and his private life.

Fascinating life story and documentary. There could have been a bit more music, that's what it's all about, you would think, with a musician. It seems to be mainly about relationships, with women and other musicians.

It is striking that not a word is mentioned about Bob Marley, who owed his breakthrough partly to Clapton's cover of I shot the Sheriff.....

A comparison with the documentary about Jan Akkerman (The Hour of the Wolf) is obvious. I found this one better and more accessible, partly because he was followed by a camera crew for a while. The documentary about Clapton consists purely of archive material and therefore remains a lot drier and more distant. I can't make it more than a "3"...

If it were up to Eric Clapton, he would have left earthly life behind him together with his good friend Jimi Hendrix. After his breakthrough as a virtuoso blues guitarist with Cream, Clapton turned his back on the commercial pressures of the music industry. After a years-long heroin addiction, he traded the drug for Remy Martin and Courvoisier. That could have been the death knell for his career, but in 2017 Clapton is still alive and happier than he ever could have imagined. Zanuck intelligently jumps back and forth between Clapton's musical career and his youth to unravel the roots of his complex personality and erratic behavior, aided by interviews with many of the key players and a wealth of (sometimes extremely) intimate footage.
