Charlie Chaplin: The Spirit of the Tramp plot

In this biographical documentary, Carmen Chaplin examines her grandfather and renowned filmmaker Charles Chaplin, and in particular their family history and its effect on his work. The Chaplin family has strong roots in the Roma community, among other things, and this has clear consequences in Chaplin's films, for example in the character of The Tramp.

The documentary does what I feared it would do: it takes the Roma aspect of Charlie Chaplin – it is certain that there was some Roma blood in Charlie Chaplin that he himself was proud of and told everyone, although the extent of it is unclear – and merely magnifies it without coming up with anything interesting. The documentary merely seeks out the influence of this in his work and life using speculations from his children and from Roma people in retrospect, but what it yields is far-fetched – from his way of moving that would show the pride of a Roma and that he, like Romas, had many children (whom he, like every Roma father, otherwise neglected) to his use of a piece of music by Brahms, a German composer who studied gypsy music – and hardly relevant to understanding his person or fame. The only thing that is relevant in this respect is that Charlie Chaplin could become such a world star of silent film because there is no speech in such a film so that Chaplin could not play a person with a certain nationality but the universal man so that all people worldwide can recognize themselves in him, which absence of a fixed nationality can be linked to gypsy life. But that is not even in this documentary (it is in the much better documentary The Real Charlie Chaplin (2021)). I am afraid that this is a superfluous documentary that has not added anything essential to what we already know about Charlie Chaplin.
