Capturing the Friedmans plot

"Who do you believe?"

The Friedmans are an apparently ordinary, middle-class Jewish-American family. In 1987, their house is suddenly stormed by the police. Arnold and his 18-year-old son Jesse are arrested and charged with possession of child pornography and of abusing dozens of boys. Under the pressure of the investigation and the curiosity of the press, the family begins to fall apart. The film looks at the events from different points of view. Strangely enough, use is also made of unique images that the family members themselves made during the escalating tensions within the family.

Very intriguing documentary told with compassion. It's been a long time since I was so moved by a documentary. What a tragedy the American legal system is.

Very penetrating and confronting. A documentary always has a voyeuristic slant, but because the maker made use of private film footage of the Friedmans, the word voyeuristic gets an extra dimension. As a viewer, this made me feel a bit uncomfortable at times.

The documentary does not answer the ultimate question of guilt. The documentary does show that no protagonist (both from the family and from the police and the judiciary) is free from guilt. in any form.

The maker does not immediately take a position, but his conviction seeps through at the end when he asks the detectives involved about their interrogation techniques with regard to the victims.

The maker leaves the objective path here for a moment, but that was not disturbing at all for me. To be honest, I was relieved to be taken by the hand (just like the maker) to be able to take a nice position.

Excellent documentary about a family where father and son are accused of abusing children. A bizarre story that took place in the late 1980s and in which those directly involved have their say. The most captivating thing about this documentary are the many home videos of the family of the time when it all took place. This gives a unique and intimate look.
