Wonderful documentary that for me is mainly based on the beautiful Cuban music and the beautiful images from Havana of the old houses that have fallen into disrepair from the Spanish colonial era and the old rusty vehicles from America in the fifties that still turned out well to do in the streets of Havana. How beautiful decay can be. It's a good thing that capitalism hasn't gotten a foothold there since the revolution in Cuba, otherwise project developers would have razed those beautiful old picturesque neighborhoods to the ground and built concrete colossi like in the big American cities. Of course, the very sympathetic-looking elderly musicians who still really had a heart for music should not go unmentioned.

Valuation; increased to 4.5*

I have nothing to do with Latin American music at all, so my appreciation for this sympathetic documentary is rather low. The genesis of the project and the interviews with the mostly elderly people involved are worthwhile, but are interspersed with long-winded and boringly filmed music fragments. Logical, of course, that's what it's all about after all, but it quickly made me a bit ticklish. I would have preferred to see more archive footage and interviews, and hear a lot less music.

Watched this documentary once and it was interesting to have seen. You get a short bio of all members, along with pieces of their performances. There are also additional images from Cuba and New York. The music is nice and summery. The songs are also always translated, it was also nice to know what they were singing about.
