One moment can change your life

Sadly, I expected a lot more from this. I thought there was too little depth in this, found it all just a bit too easy, and I also thought there were too many coincidences in the story. For example, what went very easily were the bank robberies and how badly organized the police were. The death of Gosling's character was completely unexpected and had a certain impact, but it was mainly everything that happened after his death, which interested me much less.

The two sons coming together feels like a forced ingenuity that feels way too turned on. also the party in the house where the two fight, and the reason for this feels stupid and too easily found.

I missed a kind of fireworks here, because too little energy seemed to have been put into the script. Then there can be so strong acting (I have to admit this), and beautiful shots and camerawork are used, the whole does not deserve this in my opinion. Too bad, because I expected a lot more from this.

2.0*

Hard to write anything about this movie without spoilers, so most of it goes between spoiler tags. I also advise anyone who wants to see the film not to read the reviews, because in my opinion it can quickly ruin the experience.

As said actually 3 movies in 1. The first part is by far the best. A wonderful piece of around 50 minutes with a great Ryan Gosling, very good atmosphere and music, and some great motorcycle scenes. I was quite shocked when I saw the huge pool of blood coming from under Luke's body and logically I was also a bit disappointed. Great pursuit for that by the way.
Then the second part of 40-45 minutes starts, if I remember correctly. Well, it takes some getting used to, but after about 20 minutes you're completely in it, and this part is strong, although not as good as the first part. Am not the biggest fan of Bradley Cooper in a serious role, but he plays pretty decent.
Unfortunately, the last part is a bit less. Suddenly it's 15 years later, which I'm already not a fan of, but it doesn't help if your characters still look almost exactly the same age. Unfortunately. A big minus point I also found Cooper's son, with a terribly irritating way of talking that didn't seem credible to me at all. Unfortunately, in this part everything felt a bit forced and the ending is also a bit of a shame.

Overall an absolutely beautiful, at times exciting film with a great soundtrack and strong acting. The 3-part concept is also refreshing and unique and in my opinion quite successful.

“He's my son and I should be around him. I wasn't around my Dad and look at the fuckin' way I turned out.”

I have a love-hate relationship with Cianfrance's films. On the one hand, they are beautiful and atmospheric films about the dark side of human existence. Generational conflicts, relationship problems or wrong decisions with disastrous consequences, there is no room for cheerfulness. But on the other hand, Cianfrance sometimes takes too much on his fork, his films are too long and sometimes they come across as too artificial. And the pacing of his films is sometimes a disaster.

The Place Beyond the Pines has all these strengths and weaknesses, but is the first real hit. You get three stories in one with certainly the first part that is very strong. Gosling and Mendes are great and Cooper, Ali and Mendelsohn are strong too. The tension and beautiful images (the cinematography is brilliant anyway) do the rest. The second part with Cooper is good too, but in the third part Cianfrance overplays his hand. I get the intention and it's certainly not badly done, but it doesn't have the atmosphere and subcutaneous tension of the first two parts. But overall, The Place Beyond the Pines is a rock-solid film about fathers and sons, fatal decisions and generational conflicts. A cheerful Cianfrance film so...
