The Bag Man plot
"The cat's in the bag."
Professional thief Jack is tempted into one last assignment before retiring. The assignment is simple: steal a bag with mysterious contents for mob boss Dragna without looking at the contents. While waiting for an exchange at a seedy motel, Jack is incessantly disturbed by several eccentric staff members, the creepy manager, a corrupt sheriff and the handsome Carol who has run away from home. It soon becomes apparent that completing the job will not be an easy task.

Admittedly it's all filmed a bit dark, but that just fits in with the atmosphere of this film. This is an excellent crime film with brilliant performances from Cusack, Da Costa and finally another great De Niro. The oldies like De Niro and Gibson now apparently only shine when they play the bad guy 
. This is a movie with a strong nod to Seven (if you've actually watched the movie you'll know why) and it's hardly inferior to this milestone in film history. The way the film throws you right into the action is great, no minute-long introduction or just building up instant tension. Only the final scene was a bit too much, it could have simply been left out for me. That's the only criticism I can think of, otherwise this would have been a 5 star film. Still a well deserved 4.5 stars. This is one of the top 10 movies of the year.

Started off nice but after about half an hour the Bag man got more and more annoying and I lost interest. Still tired of it (something I always do, even though the film is still so bad) but much more than a mediocre mixed bag with off and then it didn't become a nice moment. DeNiro was only surprising because of his appearance and continued to act on "his" autopilot (which is still very decent by the way) but I thought Cusack was less suitable for his role. All in all anyway a disappointment.

Robert de Niro, in serious, big roles a great actor, but when he has a supporting role it is often less than average and often the same for the film.
This film arouses your interest from the start, de Niro and Cusack (who isn't a bad actor either) and an assignment that can go two ways: either it's going to be an action movie blast to get your hands on the bag or becomes a rat race with supposedly funny bits, in which everyone tries to get the bag, which will immediately take the tension out of the film.
It soon becomes clear that unfortunately it will be the last and after the dwarf with that weird guy with the eye patch come into the picture you know enough.
Strangely enough, you as a viewer remain curious how it will end and what is actually in the bag.
Fortunately, it also doesn't "just" become a full rat race with "crazy and silly" antics, but it doesn't matter very much that the film will touch that level.
Precisely because of the brutal murders and the mysterious Rivka, the film manages to avoid the fatal comic note, but unfortunately it never gets exciting.
You expect a lot more from a film with Cusack and the Nero. A few more of these movies, and de Niro's status as a top actor, will (for me) really wane.
Just about nice to have seen one (1) time, if you go and watch without expectations, but nothing more.
