"If you mess with a cop like Sharky, you better be very tough . . . or very beautiful."
When Tom Sharky (Burt Reynolds), an undercover cop with the narcotics squad, shoots a dealer in an overcrowded bus, he is transferred to the vice squad. Clearly annoyed by this demotion, he reluctantly starts an apparently boring job to shadow the expensive prostitute 'Dominoe'. Dominoe (Rachel Ward) turns out to be having an affair with a politician who allows himself to be blackmailed by this. Sharky assembles a team of sidelined vice cops and with his 'machine' he comes within sight of the big mob boss Victor (Vittorio Gassman). One by one, witnesses and colleagues are murdered and it becomes clear that there is a mole in the police force.
