On the Waterfront plot

"The man lived by the jungle law of the docks!"

The Waterfront Crime Commission is about to hold public hearings on union crimes and infiltration by the underworld. While the dockers are pitted against each other, Terry Malloy (Marlon Brando) is unwittingly involved in the murder of a fellow docker. The murder is ordered by mob boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb) who is also the union leader and oversees all illegal criminal activities in the port. When Terry meets and gets to know the murdered man's sister, the murder begins to weigh heavily on his conscience. He is pressured by both the priest Barry (Karl Malden), who has made it his personal crusade to make the harbour crime-free, and the criminal union that wants to protect his interests at all costs.

“Conscience... that stuff can drive you nuts!”

What an unparalleled acting performance by Marlon Brando. It's a difficult role because as Terry, Brando must combine loyalty, doubt, naivety, strength, infatuation and ultimately idealism and standing up for the good, and he does it in a realistic and sincere way. Terry's cover comes across as natural and realistic, which is ultimately very important to the success of On The Waterfront. Saint, Cobb and Malden also have strong roles, and the desolate and oppressive atmosphere that Elia Kazan manages to create is wonderfully done.

Solid crime film in which the mafia calls the shots in the harbor by also controlling the union. The workers have no choice but to undergo everything to avoid being unemployed or in the worst case intimidated, resulting in death in some cases.

Despite everything, I was not as enthralled by the film as I initially thought. Marlon Brando, on the other hand, takes the film to the next level. Beautiful charismatic role! Partly with the premise of the film the assets of On the waterfront. I don't see a classic in it, but for the rest it is very solid.

A title that I bought especially for my vacation and that I wanted to sit down for a while. I wasn't quite sure what to expect because of certain reviews. Would this be an old-fashioned movie? Would this be for me? And the answers are clear, no, far from corny, but beautiful within the era, and yes, this is to the taste.

There is not much introduction involved, we know within minutes what the role of Terry is, his gnawing mood and his relationship to Johnny Friendley. The film then continues with Terry increasingly caught between two fires, Edie's mental distress, and the uncompromising Friendley who thinks only of his power. The church also plays a major role in the guise of Father Barry, something that feels dated to some viewers, but I think fits perfectly into the era.

Brando is excellent and of course it's no surprise that he got an Oscar. The role of Terry in the whole is quite difficult to name and he more than does a good job of portraying this tragic anti-hero, who is troubled by his conscience and discovers a romantic and idealistic side in himself. Flour jobs, known as snitch and henchman, 'sold' as a boxer by his brother before he could make a name for himself. You'd say it's okay with Terry. Bernstein's soundtrack is delightful, Eve Marie Saint pleasing to the eye, there are some scenes with a fine build-up, and the hardness of the time, with a shadowy union and such practices, is very stylishly presented in black and white.

On The Waterfront, also known as De Wrede Haven, is truly a beautiful classic that is loaded with a certain tragedy. Life back then was hard, and ruthless when things weren't going well. One of the few negatives are the slow-feeling scenes around the love affair between Eve and Terry, but otherwise this film is a valuable addition to my collection.
