Standard action movie that often gets very out of balance and rarely strikes the right chord. Drama and action are a bad marriage in this print. The good cast does its best but the film is at times very boring and predictable with a cringe-inducing moral. Niccol made the fine Gattaca before but this isn't really worth it. Buckley's masterpiece does not belong in this film. Average.

Lord of War

Nice cynical film about an arms dealer, who sells his goods to everyone as long as there is money to be made with it. We don't kill African children, but the weapons and the warlords we sell them to kill them... That works. Nicholas Cage clearly feels like a fish in water and these kinds of roles are made for him. Hawke, Leto and Moynahan are all in great shape as well. The music is sometimes exaggeratedly present, but it also works out well.

What really completes this film is the cynical ending. Fortunately, a sentimental ending was not chosen. Because the world needs those nice arms dealers, of course. “The reason I'll be released is the same reason you think I'll be convicted. I do rub shoulders with some of the most vile, sadistic men calling themselves leaders today. But some of these men are the enemies of your enemies. And while the biggest arms dealer in the world is your boss, the President of the United States, sometimes he needs a freelancer like me to supply forces he can't be seen supplying. So, you call me evil, but unfortunately for you, I'm a necessary evil.” Right…
