The Bondurant Boys are a notorious gang who smuggle booze through Franklin County during and after Prohibition. The gang consists of the three brothers. Forrest is the oldest, fierce, indestructible and the perfect businessman. Howard the middle brother, is a great man beset by the horrors he witnessed during the Great War. The youngest, Jack has a taste for luxury and dreams of leaving Franklin County. Driven and hounded, these men try to run a business. Meanwhile, they fall in love, fight to keep their heads above water as they watch their family die, their father's business fail, and the world collapse from depression and drought.

Great crime movie! Nice grim atmosphere, nice time frame, great screenplay by Nick Cave I saw, and he must have made the great music too. Excessive violence, and not too little, enough tension and more than fine roles from Hardy, Clarke and especially Labeouf, who is going a bit heavier here. But of course Pearce steals the show as a vain, sadistic slightly neurotic deputy sheriff. What a creep, those kinds of roles are familiar to him. And then of course Chastain is always nice to see.
More than a great movie, and more than great entertainment.

A nice film that relies mainly on imaging and setting the atmosphere. It is more than fine, beautiful time frame and beautiful images. The course and content of the story is a bit cliché and there is certainly enough predictability. Suddenly it becomes a rise and fall. The Rakes character, although wonderfully filled in by Pearce, is just a bit too over the top for the whole. End is unfortunate. But all in all a good snack.
