Koi no Tsumi plot
"Love is hell."
Inspired by true events that took place in the Maruyama neighborhood, in Tokyo's Shibuya district, at the end of the 20th century. Izumi is married to a famous novelist, but their life seems just a routine without romance. One day she decides to follow her desires and becomes a nude model mimicking sex for the camera. She soon meets a mentor and starts selling her body to strangers, but at home she is just the woman she should be. Then one day the body of a woman is found cut in half. There are also traces of other forms of abuse and it is tied to a fashion doll in an abandoned building.

A great psychological thriller until the depraved professor —with a crazy mother following in her footsteps— arrives. Although that storyline is said to be inspired by a true perverted murder in Tokyo's red light district, the film gradually becomes a lot less interesting from that point on. All the more so because I was not waiting for the professor's quasi-philosophical drivel. I would have preferred the storyline about the adulterous detective to be more in-depth, as is the case with the servile housewife who gradually starts to fulfill her repressed sexual needs. The playful mirror scene of Megumi Kagurazaka (Sono's brand new bride at the time) stands out in my opinion.
Of the films by Sion Sono that I have seen so far, in my opinion the only one that can compete in terms of level with [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/53093]Ai no Mukidashi (2008)[ /url].

Another fantastic Sono! It is still enjoyable to see how he always slowly lets his characters slide into a delusional state in which nothing is what it seems. The already much praised table scene here is really thick and humorous in all its morbidity, the film bites at the right moments! Thick 4*

My 2nd Sono after Anti-Porno, and I liked it. Guilty of Romance is in the same line, but a bit less than Anti-Porn. Visually it starts well and immediately attracts attention. I had the 144 minute version and maybe that was a bit too long. The figures are wonderfully cut, but visually the interesting part is lost. Fortunately, it remains interesting enough until the end, although not always with full conviction. It does get better towards the end. Certainly not a bad movie, but less my thing. On the other hand, it does make you curious about other films by Sono.
