Key Largo plot

"A storm of fear and fury in the sizzling Florida Keys!"

A hurricane is raging outside, but it's nothing compared to the storm at the Key Largo hotel. There, sadistic mobster Johny Rocco hides - holding hotel owner Nora Temple, her disabled father-in-law and ex-soldier Frank McCloud (Humphrey Bogart) at gunpoint. McCloud is the only one who could beat the aggressive Rocco. But the post-war realities may have made him lose all his fighting spirit.

Watched this oldie again yesterday, and just have to say it hasn't lost any strength yet. I'm not a fan of filmed theater, but this is not a problem at all here, also because they have been smart enough to film important sequences outside the hotel. For the rest, a fine bunch of character actors have been brought together, who all fulfill their roles beautifully. Bogie himself has done a better job by the way and could certainly have gotten more out of his grateful role, but that is compensated by, among other things, a sublime Robinson. The apotheosis on the boat could have been better and more realistic ( seems unlikely to me that the hitherto apathetic McCloud takes out all his opponents so easily in no time) . On the other hand, the cat and mouse game in the hotel is well worked out in detail, with every now and then nice suggestive tension. Recommended.

“Are you thieves or what? You want money, is this a robbery?”

“Yeah, Pop, we're gonna steal all your towels.”

Strong classic. Especially the combination of the black and white images, the duo Bogart/Bacall, the tropical circumstances and the crime story makes for a fascinating film, and then you also have actors such as Robinson (unparalleled), Barrymore and Gomez in colorful supporting roles. Key Largo is a standard crime story in its own right, but the location, atmosphere and actors make it anything but a standard movie. Bogart is cool and Bacall is beautiful, but of course we already knew that.

'Key Largo' had been on the shelves for ages, so I thought today, with the raging ''storm'' outside… this is a good time for this classic. Atmospheric picture. Well chosen location. The build-up in terms of tension is nice, although it only gets really good when Bogart is on the boat with the guys. Bogart and Baccall play creditable and Claire Trevor knows how to play a booze addict. Well done. The scene where she has to sing a song in exchange for a drink is very strong. Most entertaining print by Huston.
