This film was set up against my better judgement. But it's definitely not my idea of a pleasant viewing afternoon. The entertainment value of so much excessive bloody violence and so much screaming escapes me. Actually, the story is the only thing I can be positive about. One small consolation: the fact that protagonist Kōji Yakusho is still standing on his own two feet at the end is convincing proof that film is fiction.

In my opinion, the film remains qualitatively far removed from Nakashima's festive Kiraware Matsuko no Isshô (2006) and from his much more subtle revenge film Kokuhaku (2010).

Again some distasteful moments in a style over substance film that is actually not that bad in terms of story and characters. The intertwining of parental love and a father's blind hatred for his evil daughter drives him to madness. However, the chronological jumps and extremely stylized editing (mix of 70s pulp, pop, animation) make it a messy mess that sinks further and further into a swamp of cheap and repetitive violence. Some rightly describe this as "Chan Wook Park meets Tarantino" but I don't think this is a compliment for a director when the audience thinks of your film first and foremost about other directors. Mediocre.

I'm more of a fan of quiet Japanese drama cinema than this. I think Sion Sono is great. With this here I have to turn a certain switch. Kôji Yakusha can be found in various film genres and I greatly appreciate it. Here again as a completely crazy ex-detective who is looking for answers for the disappearance of his daughter.

The film goes completely off the rails so that apparently they can only do that in Asia. With many visual effects and montages that jump all over the place. At times a little too flashy and too much chaos. The pace is tight and I thought it beat around the bush too much in terms of content. Maybe also because I thought the content was a bit too messy.

Lots of riotous violence, lots of blood... The film lets itself go completely, with the main character's total madness and desire for revenge as the common thread. Hard to sympathize with the character. Not great, but certainly not bad either. But I mainly leave it to the fans to recommend the film (or not).
