Reconstruction of the conviction and execution of Barbara Graham using newspaper articles and other publications. Was she innocent? We'll never know, because the people who know have taken that secret to their graves.

Very nice role by Susan Hayward, for which she was awarded an Oscar, although I think her acting in I'll cry tomorrow (1955) is still a lot better, while she has not been awarded for it.

The cold, business-like preparation of the execution cuts quite a bit.

Whether the real Barbara Graham was guilty, we'll never know. The versions contradict each other. However, the mere fact that we don't know is enough to denounce the continued existence of the death penalty.

Susan Hayward shows a range of emotions: desperation, anger, elation, cynicism and love for her baby. She arouses sympathy for Babs, who has had a difficult childhood and has a talent for seeking out the wrong company and making ill-considered decisions. She is framed by a questionable police method. There are examples of people who later backtracked on an provoked confession.

The skewed camera angles in the beginning suggest the instability of a drunken stupor. The prisoner is often shown through bars and zoomed in on her from above, which gives an oppressive feeling. Several matchcuts have been used. The H of Hotel is first shown from outside, then from the hotel room. From the hammering of the bongos during the frenzied party, the editing jumps to the judge's gavel. A screeching trumpet is followed by the baby's cries. Immediately after her execution the word "STOP" appears on the road surface.

The jazz music creates a smoky, decadent atmosphere. The first time she steps into the execution chamber, it is to the rhythm of a death march; the second time there is silence. The ethical issue, the lived acting and the atmosphere creation make this a timeless gem.

The atmosphere in the beginning of the film was certainly not something that really appealed to me, otherwise good playing by Hayward

an actress who was not very well known to me .

It is also bizarre to note that this woman was sentenced to death for 1 so-called murder, while several Nazi female criminals were also allowed to walk free in the US for a long time.
