Nicole Bonnet (Audrey Hepburn) is the daughter of a master forger. She regrets that her father earns his living in this way, but she loves him and can't really blame him. One evening she surprises a man (Peter O'Toole) in the main hall of her father's house, with a forgery of an 'unknown' work by Vincent van Gogh in his hands. She suspects that he is a thief, who wants to get away with her father's work. However, the confrontation is surprising, because apparently both can learn a lot from each other.
