Melville's first crime film reminded me of Dassin's Rififi and is at least as good to my eyes, especially thanks to the beautiful role of a stoic Roger Duchesne as gambler / masterbrain. Moreover, a physically imposing debut of the then only 16-year-old Isabelle Corey (Et Dieu... Créa la Femme, 1956), who mainly made a splash in Italy during her (much too) short film career.

Disappointing film by Melville (my sixth already). French film noir with a tired cliché story about a local gambler who gets it into his head to rob the casino of Deauville. All in all quite ordinary for a film by Melville... I was afraid that it would become a banal heist after that but the film gets its own twist that leaves the conventions behind... but to say that this was a remarkable film. No, not at all. The "atmosphere of the time" is really not that brilliant by the way... I think his 60s films are much better.

A good noir/crime that takes place in the Montmartre area of Paris and is also a beautiful period piece. Roger Duchesne plays and is Bob Le Flambeur. In real life he was certainly not an uncontroversial figure. His role during the Second World War is approached very critically because he is said to have had ties with the Gestapo and according to the reading in the bonus documentary (with my Blu-ray) he is said to have personally tortured someone. He was also very familiar with gambling. Jean-Pierre Melville also chose him because he agreed to film in bits and pieces (for budgetary reasons). And then it is special that Melville himself - as a Jew - was a member of the resistance in France during the war.

Despite the low budget - Melville even took care of the set construction - it is a visually very attractive portrait of a Parisian neighborhood in the fifties. Direction and lighting are top notch despite the low budget. The story is a coming and going of characters with varying degrees of scruples. The ending of this heist film is quite surprising. Worth (re)watching.
