After 10 years of relationship, Álex [Vito Sanz] and Ale [Itsaso Arana] decide to call it quits. Ale’s father [Fernando Trueba] believes that a divorce should be celebrated. So Álex and Ale seek out their friends to personally invite them to celebrate their divorce in Madrid on the last day of summer. No story, just a series of meetings and conversations in anticipation of the party. There’s even a scene where some of the cast seem to be discussing the film we’ve just watched 70 minutes of. Some might call that “intelligent,” but it seems more like Trueba trying to salvage a mediocre romantic drama with a touch of arthouse. That rarely improves films, and this is no exception.

Couple breaks up after 14 years and decides to celebrate. Yes, celebrate. It's a nice idea, right? Better to celebrate a break-up than a marriage.

Anyway, the film starts with the above and it is then explained in similar terms to some 37 neighbors, family members, colleagues and friends in just as many scenes, even the hastily assembled handyman gets to hear the same old spiel. This repetitive stuff obviously has a Deeper Meaning, but it doesn't come across at all; the meta-film that Trueba apparently had in mind soon runs out of breath and dies an inglorious death. A few good roles (especially the male half of the cast) but as a whole far below par.

I didn't think it was that bad. I didn't need that layer of metal, but the constant repetition of the same conversation was nice. You feel that the makers wanted to do something original and that is commendable. The result is just a bit hit-and-miss.

What I did find funny was that you hardly get to know the main characters, and their story even less. It is quite unclear why they want to break up, and why they ever got together. You can fill that in yourself. Still nice that they leave that up to the viewers. Not every creator dares to do that.
