The Big Chill plot

"The story of eight old friends searching for something they lost, and finding that all they needed was each other."

Seven friends who studied together in the turbulent 1960s meet again after years at a friend's funeral. This sad event prompts them to renew old friendships, but also to reflect on death, their own mortality and their lost innocence. The formerly rebellious young adults are now almost all part of the establishment. Their friend's death painfully confronts them all with the betrayal of their former ideals.

Hurt and Goldblum star in this beautiful film by Kasdan. Painful moments, fascinating personalities, good dialogue... just a very beautiful film.

4*.

A group of thirty-somethings reunite after years and look back on the ideals they used to have and how they became who they are today. There is loss, old wounds are torn open and healed again, old desires are fulfilled. No idea if The Big Chill was so original in that vein, but it is certain that this idea has been passed around hundreds of times since then, from the British version Peter's Friends to the brilliant Flemish series De Parelvissers . That's why the beginning of The Big Chill feels a bit annoying: it seems like you've seen this movie a hundred times already. And there is so little to gain from funeral scenes.

But look, when they move into the vacation home and spend a weekend together for the first time in years, the movie really gets going. The actors play well together, there's humor and melancholy, and of course the records the characters put on to remind them of their college days in the sixties. It never becomes groundbreaking or life-changing and the moral is a bit too much in some dialogues, but this is a film that I always remember with a smile.

Despite the impressive cast, I found this to be a dull relationship talk film. A group of friends from university reunite after about 15 years after the suicide of Alex, one of their friends; In those few days that they stay together, they reflect on where they are (and are not) in their lives, the wrong choices they have made, the new turns they would like to give to their existence, etc. The low point was that Meg with her desire to have children, who just like the idea of asking one of her friends to get her pregnant. It's the same problem here as with St Elmo's Fire (2*). They are all successful highly educated people with uninteresting luxury problems. I don't recognize myself in this kind of people.
