Shortbus plot

"Open Your Mind. And Everything Else."

Shortbus follows a group of New Yorkers who balance on the tragicomic boundaries of sex and love. All the characters and their problems come together in an erotic nightclub. A film full of philosophical questions, carnal lusts and impetuous love.

The combination of sex, humor and transvestites is not new. But a director like Pedro Almodóvar does put those elements into good films. The eroticism is completely out of sex, which here feels mainly technical or as an obligation. There is not much talk of humor either, unless you would consider performing transvestites humorous in itself. And by using actors who dare to go the extra mile to portray something more explicit, you also miss good acting performances. It's all quite soapy with a lot of sex and false artificial images. Not that it would have been a top film, but there could have been more in it.

Poor Sofia... She's a sex therapist, can't give herself an orgasm and ends up in some sort of occassion full of nasty cousins... From then on (and that was pretty smooth) I was fed up with this very annoying movie. Has no soul at all and it arouses irritation. I'm quite open minded but to have to endure another quasi homoerotic scene is going too far for me. In the end I thought Shortbus was very cheap and lacking in spirit. Only the animated bits of New York with the flying camera were worth it.

Surprisingly many negative comments. Of course this isn't great, but I didn't think it was that bad. As far as I've been able to follow, the film is about fears and frustrations within a sexual relationship. It will just happen to you. That's why I kind of like the “that's okay, all's well that ends well”.
In previous comments I have come across comparisons with “Caligola” and “Baise-moi”. Compared to those vulgar films, I still rate this film higher. Admittedly there are some awkward scenes and positions in it. So what?
