Mads and his beautiful girlfriend Marie move into their new home, but then he suddenly starts to have doubts... is he really happy? Mads lets everything fall out of his hands, leaves Marie and desperately searches for his greatest dreams - a search for meaning in life and for true love. Along the way, he encounters his friends Louise and Peter, dates, a new younger girlfriend, broken relationships, meetings with in-laws and long nights on the town.

The title (“The Truth about Men”) is misleading, because the film is about only one man, a man in his thirties who suffers from a midlife crisis ten years early, which lasts almost all of the movie continues. Designated as a romantic comedy, the funny moments are scarce and the romance is also hard to find and is actually limited to the short episode in which the once again surprising Rosalinde Mynster – fantastic in To Verdener (2008) – makes her appearance does in the chaotic life of Mads (Thure Lindhardt).
A parallel can be drawn between the uninspired script writer Mads and the film itself, because the ideas of the writers of this screenplay, including director Arcel, also seem to have dried up quite quickly.
All in all it is rather meager with the exception of the good acting of the aforementioned Mynster (an asset to the film world) and the beautiful Tuva Novotny, but both play only a modest role in the whole. Certainly not a film that will impress many people, except for the beautiful poster.

Romantic comedies are many. Difficult to produce anything original in that area. Nikolaj Arcel, who wrote and directed the film, does not do that. Still, the film is a pleasant film. The film has two strengths that lift it above the average. In the first place, that is its protagonist. Secondly, the film has a nice ironic tone that does not give any viability to sugary sweet moments that are so characteristic of the genre.
Mads is the main character. Lame and hypochondriac. He's a script writer. He considers his life as the script for a film. In one of his screenplays, he has a character say, "If your life was a movie, would you... watch it?" It's a question Mads asks herself. His film script, his life and his dreams and memories are increasingly merging with each other. Fear not, however, because Sandheden om Mænd is not a film within a film.
Mads has imagination but keeps both feet on the ground. He is dissatisfied and not happy and searching. Still, he's not annoying. His somewhat wacky behavior and peculiar reflections make him a sympathetic character. That sympathetic aspect also applies to the other characters who, like Mads, are flattered. You could say rom-com style. Too strongly accentuated to be credible and yet just believable enough to sympathize with or not. Depending on the character sketch of the character involved.
Sandheden om Mænd is a fine film that takes an ironic approach to the clichés of the genre. A light-hearted but also biting story about a search for a life destination. A little strange but fun and delicious.
