I'm actually quite surprised by all the fairly negative comments here. Personally thought this was one of the nicest and most hilarious Dutch movies I've seen so far. Great idea, but also very well executed in my opinion.

Starting with the wonderful characters and performances. Marc van Uchelen played a brilliant lead role (he sometimes reminded me of a mix between Marcel Hensema and Steve Carrel). Furthermore, the film was full of brilliant supporting roles by German football fan Peer Mascini, cockroach Victor Löw and of course Huup Stapel and Ariane Schluter as the hilariously quarreling couple.

The humor in the film was also excellent, with good dialogue and wonderfully fat characters. Furthermore, the film was full of fun camera tricks and (innocent) visual effects, had an excellent atmosphere and also great music by Sumedi. And once I didn't bother with Hüpscher.

Pretty underrated movie, if you ask me. In any case, I thought it was one of the nicest Dutch people I know. Even liked it more than the movie Terstall made after that. But I don't think I share that opinion with a few people here.

For the time being, 4 big stars for Rent-a-Friend!

For the first 15 minutes I felt like I was watching the wrong movie. Lots of uninteresting relationship troubles, related to an ugly looking soap opera.

The function of the soap later turns out to be valuable only when you find out that Alfred's former girlfriend has been cheated by her boyfriend. It is also positive that the film depicts more than enough diverse friendships. Several perspectives are tapped here, by not only proclaiming the positive element of this. Just like when starting up and expanding your 'own company' there are both positive and negative characteristics. Fortunately, the negative sides are not of a permanent, nagging nature and are quickly alternated with, for example, a somewhat happily portrayed holiday in Mexico or taking a steam bath.

The most hilarious moments for me were the Dutchman who was secretly for Der Manschaft and Jan Diederik who, together with a friend, brought back the good old days and suddenly fell over a name while talking. In the end I found the climax quite refreshing, I had actually expected that Alfred would still be driven back into the arms of his girlfriend. A thoroughly entertaining Dutch film that sticks to its original premise and makes the best use of a good screenplay, which is full of different types of people looking for any kind of friend. 4*
