Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way, wrote Tolstoy. But in director Israel Horovitz's debut film, it helps that the French have come up with the most bizarre real estate law in the history of the world. A French law prescribes that someone may only sell a house if its occupants have died.

This story revolves around New Yorker Mathias Gold (Kevin Kline), who is dealing with major financial problems. Fortunately, he once inherited an apartment in Paris from his father and when he sells it, his money worries are over in one fell swoop. Matthias immediately flies to the French capital to make some arrangements, but is shocked to discover that his apartment is occupied by an elderly lady, Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith), and her daughter, Chloé Girard (Kristin Scott). Thomas). This makes it very difficult for Mathias to sell that million-dollar house and he tries everything to get the two out of his house. In the meantime, he discovers more about his father and his own childhood.

Nice, light-hearted tragicomedy, in which Maggie Smith plays her colleagues crazy and she is also the only reason that this somewhat lazy Comedy / Drama film gets a narrow pass from me.

A reasonable movie. The story didn't really interest me and I didn't find the humor very funny, but it was still quite enjoyable and it was attractively depicted. I think the acting is good. Not a high flyer, but a sufficient score (6). 3*

57-year-old Mathias Gold [Kevin Kline] has sold everything he owns in the US to emigrate to Paris. After all, his recently deceased father left him a spacious apartment in Paris that he bought 40 years ago as an investment. Mathias wants to sell the apartment and use the money to build a new life. But there appears to be a catch. Thanks to a French legal construction, the apartment is formally owned by 90-year-old Mathilde [Maggie Smith]. According to that rule, Mathias even has to give her a monthly allowance until she dies. Only then can he call himself owner. Mathias and Mathilde come to an arrangement and Mathias is introduced to Mathilde's daughter Chloé [Kristin Scott Thomas], who is about to divorce her adulterous husband [Stéphane De Groodt]. A cast to die for, but Horovitz has not managed to break open his own play and cannot escape the trap of filmed theater.
