Irma Vep plot

A French filmmaker on his way out, tries to make a comeback with the film adaptation of the story 'Les Vampires'; about a feline thief, Irma Vep. Maggie Cheung (playing herself) is chosen as the new Irma. Arriving on the set, she notices that the director is the laughingstock of the crew, but she resolves to be loyal nonetheless. After a while, Maggie gets too caught up in her role and slips out of her hotel room to rob guests.

Good film about a Hong Kong actress who comes to France for a remake of a silent film. It comes across as a bit unstructured here and there, but all scenes are entertaining. Nice meta all because it is a film about film. Also a nice role by Maggie Cheung who basically plays herself.

On its own, Irma Vep (1996) may not be the most brilliant film ever. But in combination with Les Vampires (1915) and Irma Vep (2022) it suddenly becomes a completely different story. The film and the series are fun together - the film as a critique and observation of the state of the French film world of the 1990s, the series with a similar approach to the streaming industry today. With some stitches now and then - for example when discussing why the series is so long, and Assayas forgets that the original Les Vampires also lasts about 8 hours.

The film is also worth it for the fine soundtrack and the presence of Maggie Cheung who plays a wonderfully neutral version of herself. Perhaps nowhere with the depth and breadth of degeneration that Alicia Vikander shows in the series, but the time in the film is simply too short for that.

With the two remakes, Assayas delivers a beautiful masterpiece, a two-part critique of the film world through a film within a film, and then the film and the series complement each other very nicely. Very handsome.

Compared to the series rawer, more organic, more atmospheric, but less funny and less elaborated. Irma Vep is rather unpolished and that has something in itself. However, I understand that Assayas was not done with this.
