Visually interesting, this fixed view of a living room in New England through the years/centuries, but unfortunately not always equally captivating in terms of content. Paul Bettany and Tom Hanks play strong roles and their plot lines provide the best moments. The rest comes off rather poorly and especially rushed. The digital rejuvenation of certain characters is once again hit and miss; sporadically it looks convincing, at other times... not.

I was happy with this film. Even though the film is not exactly subtle at times, this thing still managed to touch me. The observing camera works very well. In any case, the fact that the camera remains in one place is a good choice because the emphasis is much more on what changes in the image because that image is constantly the same. It is enjoyable in several ways. From the decoration of the houses in which you see 125 years of interiors passing by to the life and well-being of people who live somewhere. And also make memories there. Your house is something important and the picture knows how to convey that feeling excellently. By playing with those grids there is a nice reference to the comic strip form and this is a nice way to play with the different times.

The AI works reasonably well. I thought Hanks looked convincing, Wright basically too except the last shot when the camera finally moves and gets close to her skin, that didn't look good. Way too smooth. Also the opening scene with the meteorite was ugly and really a false note. 4.0*.

Robert Zemeckis deserves credit for his willingness to experiment with the art of film, even if the result in this case is not entirely successful. The title refers to a specific location on the American continent and is filmed almost entirely with a static camera that records the events at that location over a period of millions of years. The bulk of the film takes place in the house built there at the beginning of the 20th century and shows both dramatic and casual moments from the lives of the residents. Among them are Al [Paul Bettany] and Rose [Kelly Reilly] who moved into the house after World War II and have three children. The eldest of these is Richard [Tom Hanks] who will spend most of his life there with his great love Margaret [Robin Wright]. The rejuvenated version of Hanks in particular looks fake and raises the question why Zemeckis did not choose young actors, but the biggest problem is the constant jumping back and forth through time which means there is no dramatic build-up. But Jesse Goldsmith's editing is creative, at times effective and helps ensure that this never becomes boring.
