Black stoner comedy.

I usually don't like the white version at all, so it wasn't that surprising that I couldn't do much with this either. Still, I was a bit surprised by the laziness of the humor. Apparently the idea of weed itself is funny enough, because that much is not thrown on top. Just two slackers hanging out for a bit on a Friday.

It's that Ice Cube and Chris Tucker still want to make something of their characters, even if they only half succeed. Their characters are not that fun or surprising, and this also applies to the rest of the cast. Some old acquaintances from TV series, but little really positive to report.

The bit of drama that is in it doesn't really come across, but that is difficult when the humor is largely in the water. And then there is mainly a bit of lightness and a not too long playing time. Not a very good start for Gray, in any case not a director I hold very highly, but I'd rather see him make action movies.

Friday is a funny movie that started a cult trilogy. This slice of a day movie isn't particularly hilarious anywhere, nor does it have a special plot. Which, of course, is inherent when the events all take place in one day. It is important with this kind of film that it should not drag on for too long, which Gray understands. The film lasts less than an hour and a half and that ensures that the light-hearted atmosphere is enjoyable.

I understand that movies like this aren't for everyone. The film mainly consists of black people who swear things together and characters who really look for the extremes of the spectrum. One is a very scaredy-cat, but the other is very macho and bossy.

Especially nice for the people who like to watch that ghetto atmosphere and the lazy who chill out a bit during the day and do some mischief.

The early Gray.

Funny that Friday is quite different from his other films. Gray has meanwhile become more of a director who either wants to tell a serious story or focuses on all-out action. Friday is his movie debut on MovieMeter, and is also a completely different film from Gray's other films, and none of the earlier examples.

This film is a full-blooded comedy and doesn't have any clever or complex humor. Gray is fully committed to bland and clumsy humor such as loud fart noises and strange characters. The kind of humor I usually enjoy, but that wasn't the case here. I think this is because Gray is trying too hard.

Normally I wouldn't have a problem with that. Directors are allowed to do their best, but Gray goes too far on several levels. Both the soundtrack and the humor sometimes cross borders in terms of crowds, so that you as a viewer don't even get the space to really laugh about something. Gray shows when a scene should be funny to such an extent that the humor is basically sucked out.

Visually it looks cheap, but since Gray, as I emphasized in the previous paragraph, puts a lot of effort into style, the cheap look is still forgivable. In any case, the makers were enthusiastic during the writing and the performance. However, the delivery fails, which is a shame, because this film certainly had potential.

The acting pulls the film as a whole to a 2.5*, although not everyone was in good shape. Most of the talented acting comes from the two gentlemen, who put together quite nice characters. Furthermore, the film makes a lot of attempts to be a kind of parody without explicit references to other films (at least, I haven't seen them) but it doesn't want to be really fun. Fortunately it doesn't last too long and has a happy final after a fairly tiring first half.
