Very bizarre weird movie. A film that reminds me of a cross between the idiosyncratic Danish film De Grønne Slagtere (2003) and a few bizarre French "character films" such as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001) or Au Revoir Là-Haut (2017).

The film is a cabinet of curiosities that takes you into an alienating world. Each scene, on the other hand, is meticulous and has a fairytale feel to it. The atmosphere and experience of the film is therefore high. A film for which you have to be in the mood or you will soon get annoyed by all the busy expressive stuff.

Crazy and bizarre are the right words to describe the film. Funny at times, but after a while I'd had it. He also looks tiring. Many nice good elements although not everything was successful. The underground, for example, didn't really fit into the story. Good to see...

With Amélie and Un Long Dimanche De Fiançailles, Jeunet has two films that I really like. Films that are far apart, the one imaginative and the other a drama about the First World War, but both with the similarity that it is regularly absurd. That promised something with this film that is also post-apocalyptic and of course with a strange story.

The beautiful visual style in terms of color, lighting and decoration is striking right from the start. For example, the recurring shot of the stairwell is beautiful. The story is obviously absurd and weird and the characters of course different. The soundtrack is dreamy and connects nicely every now and then. Remarkable are the two scenes in the initial phase where a repetitive action coincides with music and actions of other residents, by which I mean of course the sex scene and the search for the squeaky bedspring. Funny and above all beautifully mounted and executed. Yet the impression of the film in that first phase does not come close to that of the two other films.

As far as I'm concerned, Delicatessen lacks a bit of an appealing character, something that is better in order in the other two films. Jeunet doesn't seem to want anything like that and bets more on small character moments such as Louison's acts and moments. Or, for example, Aurore's complicated suicide attempts. Despite this, the film still just fails to convince me until the endgame arrives and the Troglodists get involved and the case turns into a big mess where your ears and eyes almost fall short. It is this phase that pulls the film over the line for a good pass.

Delicatessen is weird, dreamy, disturbing, alienating, humorous, stylish, and above all it should suit you.

My favorite film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, beautifully made and especially the atmosphere and the crazy characters make it a real winner.
