Sam Raimi and the Coen brothers had just made their rock-solid feature film debuts with The Evil Dead and Blood Simple, respectively. So what do you do? You join forces to make a flashy and over-the-top cartoonish carnival ride of a slapstick film, of course! It takes some getting used to the tone and the buckets of kitsch that pass by, but fortunately there are some amusing moments after a while. The jokes are usually not really funny, but there are often some funny ideas hidden in the camerawork and effects. Raimi and the Coen brothers are clearly inspired by The Three Stooges and farce, among other things. In that respect, Crimewave is sometimes very entertaining, but it can also quickly become very annoying.

2.5 stars.

More fun than I expected, but also often very lame humor.

There are several reasons not to pass up this film: the Coen brothers' screenplay, a tiny role for Frances McDormand as a nun, Bruce Campbell, the cartoonish content.

Those who like looney tunes will have fun with this, because all the hyperbole from the cartoon is tackled, both in the physical expressions and in the situations. A good example are those two criminals Faron and Arthur. Especially with Faron you immediately think of Bluto from Popeye... That scene where he rams through a series of doors while chasing an old lady... Brion James, better known as a villain in action films, uses his sneaky head for comic effect here. The first half of this film was quite disappointing to me, but the second half worked much better and miraculously it became hilarious a few times. After the credits there is a post-credit scene...

Nice movie in which a man sentenced to death claims to be innocent. Written by the Coen brothers and directed by Sam Raimi, this feels more like a Coen movie (but a bit more chaotic). The over-the-top acting is sometimes a bit annoying. Otherwise entertaining, a bit quirky and an action-packed finale.
