A nice first fifteen minutes. Admittedly quite confusing because you are presented with quite a few characters in a short time; but the portion of fine humor that is incorporated there, immediately draws you into the story - just a bit different from the heavy dialogues that are often woven into this kind of costume dramas.

However, after that, just a little too little happens to be able to speak of a strong film, especially with the abundance of flashbacks that make the story meander along.

The ending is quite gloomy and hard, but throughout the film all the good and less good events are presented so light-heartedly that you as a viewer don't get sad. I actually don't know if that's a good or a bad thing...

Low budget, but the director knows how to camouflage that well. Moreover, he has gathered a bunch of good actors, who he also lets play lifelike characters, instead of the theatrical situations that can sometimes irritate me in this kind of film.

Not a great film, but an enjoyable watch.

Owen [James Norton] and Dolly [Felicity Jones]'s wedding day is disrupted by the unannounced appearance of Dolly's old flame Joseph [Luke Treadway] who hopes to win her heart again. And Dolly sees more in Joseph than in her good but boring groom. Costume drama with a very large (and confusing) cast and comic moments that fall flat due to poor timing and (literally) colorless photography that create a depressing atmosphere for what should have been a light story. No wonder there is little to laugh about.
