Breakfast on Pluto plot

"Same world. Different planet."

Patrick Braden (Cillian Murphy) has always been an outcast. His mother abandoned him as a child and he has a hard childhood. When it turns out that he also likes to walk around in women's clothing, Patrick is almost made a village madman. As he gets older, Patrick starts to behave more and more extravagantly and starts to transform himself more and more into the alter ego of the androgynous Kitten. While political tensions build in his hometown, Patrick aka Kitten decides to set out in search of himself, his life and especially his real mother. The search eventually takes him to the flamboyant London of the 1970s. Here Kitten does not know what he sees. However, London does not bring the happiness Kitten is looking for and the question is whether he will ever find his mother.

The film starts strong, but halfway through the film it sinks slightly, and then ends strong again.

The cast does an excellent job, although Cillian Murphy really stands head and shoulders above the rest. The music was also a great asset.

The story was certainly original, as were the various characters.

It's definitely a standout movie, but I did enjoy it.

Blissful movie.

Yes, until the 1960s there was still a fairly low tolerance policy. Patrick has to deal with that. This boy does not feel like a boy and thinks that he was born in the wrong body, with the fear of his family and the many villagers. Not to mention he was dumped as a baby in front of a random religious couple (whose father is brilliantly portrayed by Liam Neeson). All this ensures that the negative view of the world has become so entrenched in Patrick that he will no longer take anything or anyone seriously in the future and that he has completely withdrawn into his own world. Nevertheless, he tries to make a new start in swinging London, with all the ups and downs that entails.

However, this is not a melancholy feeling, but a feel-good movie that tries to put things down as lightly and playfully as possible, with the help of many funny elements; the colorful settings, those sparrows and also the whole IRA happening around that time. And then the friendship he makes with those extras... until Patrick finds out that these are also protesters who have cleaned up the weapons. The icing on the cake was that part in the prison and especially that Peepshow part.

Yes, what to say. Breakfast on Pluto is a happy movie, but the story itself is quite sad. In any case, Neil Jordan has made a strong creative script and Murphy plays the stars from heaven. Class!

4.5*

Special tragicomedy about a progressive man who lived as a transvestite. Cinematography mixed inside and out in the 60s/70s, the time of riots, riots and bombings in Northern Ireland. Music fits well with the lyrics. The role of Patrick/Paddy/Patricia/Kitten/Kitty is brilliantly portrayed by Cillian Murphy! Patrick had an eventful life with a difficult start as a foundling. He was punished for his "girly feeling" and his request for sex change. Society at the time was not ready to understand and accept this... Plot seemed based on a play, because of the theatrical lyrics (and the robins). Chapter division could have been replaced with voice-over, but it didn't bother me. The police response was shocking and transgressive..... The ending is dramatic at first with beautiful music, but then a happy ending!
