Robert Altman's Beyond Therapy is a messy movie. Compared to other works by Altman, which are notable for their considerable length and meticulous direction, this is the odd one out. If I had watched the film without any prior knowledge, I would never have linked the name Altman to this film. Beyond Therapy lasts only 90 minutes and comes across as a fleetingly twisted production. You could see the film as a collection of separate scenes, which, although related in terms of content, do not follow classical dramaturgy.

The film kicks off as a bizarre comedy about neurotic people. The characters don't develop. They are the same characters at the end of the movie as they were at the introduction. They are, as the title suggests, 'beyond therapy'. Little streamlined characters who present themselves nervous, excited, restless and noisy. A solid dramaturgy is not spent on such types. A bouncy sketch show all the more.

The characters and events are absurd enough to entertain. But it doesn't stop. Here and there some successful comedy and some sharp dialogues. Here and there some funny starters that get bogged down in a lot of excited squabbling that isn't particularly funny in the end. I also noticed that Julie Hagerty has a very annoying voice, that Tom Conti has a very annoying accent and that 90 minutes in a mediocre movie feels longer than 90 minutes in a good movie.
