Was a little apprehensive about watching 170 minutes of Bollywood, but somehow I was also curious! Anyway, at least it turned out great. 3 Idiots offers a fascinating look at Indian university culture that is extremely performance-driven. The music was nice and not overly present, so that the story continues nicely. It hangs together from clichés, but it comes across smoothly and sincere, so that the annoyance was avoided. Towards the end, however, I found it to be somewhat out of control with bizarre developments and too many sweet things.

Of the recent Indian films, it strikes me that almost all of them have quite a long running time. There is also always a lot of singing, the sentiment is not avoided and the images are often very colorful and dynamic. With these 3 Idiots, all these ingredients are present again, although I am a lot less enthusiastic than the rest of the people here.

The first hour isn't too bad. Despite the fact that it all ripples by, without real highlights, it all looks nice. But at a certain point I started to get a little irritated with the humor, which I more often than not liked. At a certain point I also thought the melodrama was just too much of a good thing. While the other recent Indian movies I saw had that as well, I found it more disturbing here. Amir Khan is still the best of the three idiots, the other two are a lot less talented.

As usual, there was also a lot of music in between. It's not always like that for me. Here it took you somewhat out of the story and often it is not the best music. No, these 3 Idiots didn't really appeal to me. Too much melodrama, too little successful humor and not too strong music. Fortunately, the dynamic camera work and the colorful, large-scale scenes ensure that it is still somewhat entertaining.

Moderate feel good.

170 minutes is too long anyway. The film has very little to do, with 90 minutes it was also successful. Throw out a few musical numbers, cut out some unnecessary drama and you have a much fresher, tighter film.

The humor is pretty limited anyway. It never gets really funny, the atmosphere is light-hearted, thanks to the colorful cinematography and the somewhat cartoonish characters. The underlying moral is pushy and corny, but that's part of it I suppose.

Only I had seen it all after a good hour and then you are stuck with this film for another 2 hours. There are no more surprises in those last two hours, all the film does is turn around 10 times in its own corniness. Not really for me.

Fortunately it never gets really slow or too dramatic, but I can't call myself a fan yet. So far, those Indian films have been disappointing.
