The Two Popes plot

Frustrated by the direction the Catholic Church is taking, Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce) seeks permission from Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) to retire in 2012. Rather than accept the resignation, the introverted Pope Benedict, faced with slander and lack of self-confidence, calls on his ruthless critic and future successor to Rome to reveal a secret that is shaking the foundations of the Catholic Church. Behind the Vatican walls, a struggle begins between tradition and progress, guilt and forgiveness. Meanwhile, these two very different men try to confront their own past in order to find common ground and create a future perspective for the church and its billion followers worldwide.

Tour-de-force in propaganda for the current Pope. Hopkins' Benedict and Pryce's Bergoglio are ideologically miles apart in a first encounter (conservative vs. progressive) but grow one after the other when Benedict suddenly thinks he is losing his 'line' with God and then sees in Bergoglio the (divine) designated person to reform and advance the Church. Reality couldn't be further from this development - everyone is free to do their own research. It is telling that the film deals with the 'resignation' of Benedict so laconic - a contradiction in terms within the Church, which in the screenplay is reduced to a reference to the thirteenth century ('that's when it happened'). Meirelles comes up with numerous flashbacks, some in different black and white, which color Bergoglio's past history and thus underline which perspective is leading. As a viewer, I realized that I could come to no other conclusion than that Bergoglio is a (positive Marxist-inspired) hero who reconnects the church with the people and stands up for all the less fortunate. In that context, Benedict is infantile, slightly demented and hopelessly archaic in his view of power and sexuality, among other things. And The Two Popes was created to show how wonderful it is that he has wanted to transfer his seat in friendship and connection.

It is original in scope, perhaps a little daring and certainly unusual where those two church leaders are portrayed as basically ordinary people, with the same flaws as everyone else, but it is especially sparkling when serious and less serious issues are the subject of disagreements. between those two wonderful actors, one moment I want to extend the palm to Anthony Hopkins, the next to his opponent Jonathan Pryce.

Humor is never out of the blue, not even when those two are sometimes offended, do not tolerate contradiction or just have had enough.

The practices of the "house" are also smoothly exposed, also make you a bit wiser and that towards the end some emotion creeps in does not damage this fine film in which, as said, above all, the dialogues and the masterful acts are particularly enjoyable. .

Mediocre.

The Two Popes starts off pretty well. It looks - for a 'pope movie' - fairly flashy. The combination of the medieval course of events at the election of Ratzinger and the mass hysteria on St. Peter's Square is beautifully portrayed and where I had expected a long talk film, the first hour turns out to be not that bad. All the more so because Jonathan Pryce and Anthony Hopkins act excellently and their interplay - effectively scenes full of chatter - is amusing.

But after that first hour and the first discussion, the focus shifts to Jorge/Francis. His past is revealed and his way to the top is discussed. My interest in it is nil, so that whole second hour was a tough session. The film then lasts another 2 hours, then it becomes challenging to keep watching with the necessary attention, despite Hopkins and Pryce.

2.5
