Selena plot

"Discover the true story of one of America's brightest stars... that faded too soon."

Selena is not only a true story, but also the story of a young girl who makes a career at lightning speed and - just as young - is murdered. In Mexico the American Selena was a household name, comparable to Madonna. Her music drew full football stadiums, her records were at the top of the charts and her fan club was fanatic. It would be that same fan club that would kill her. Selena's life, from the maddened success racetrack of an American Dream, ran dead in a bloody alleyway of an American nightmare.

Nice true-life drama about the murdered (shot dead in a hotel room by a jealous friend Yolanda Saldívar) young Mexican singer Selena. The role of Selena is played nicely and well by Jennifer Lopez, who more or less really broke through as a singer and actress through this film. Quite ironic when you look at it that way.

The story is quite well put together and the same applies to its colorful execution. Musically (including some songs from rock group Guns N' Roses) it is also quite enjoyable, especially with the sight of the beautiful voluptuous Jennifer Lopez. Besides the good role of Jennifer Lopez, other actors and actresses also performed well, such as Edward James Olmos. The film is a bit long-winded here and there and in my opinion it could have been a little shorter.

It has been a long time since I last saw this film, but because they are now broadcasting it again on the HBO channel, I have reviewed it again. All in all, just a nice Drama / Music to see and it is of course sad what happened to Selena in the end.

For the fans of Selena Quintanilla. From what I know about Selena, the movie follows the true events fairly closely. Nice to see the dilemma of the Mexican-Americans: not American enough for the Americans and not Mexican enough for the Mexicans. I certainly believe there is some truth in that and of course it's great that Selena has managed to avoid this.

In any case, Jennifer Lopez gives a strong performance, both in the dialogues and in the music scenes where she dances away. Anyway, for someone like me who is not a fan, it all takes a bit long, especially the last half hour. Of course, there is a build-up to the murder, which then takes place offscreen. It feels like an anticlimax and that further detracts from the film. 1.5*.
