Well, nice to have seen it once, but I didn't get a wow feeling from it either. I didn't know anything about Mr. Abagnale Jr before this film and just went in without really knowing what it was about. The film does have a clear signature tune that reappears several times throughout the film, which is why it might be considered a modern classic. Unfortunately I didn't find anything special about it at all, it was just an entertaining story with a boring Tom Hanks and a young charmismatic DiCaprio. However, I was not bored at all and this film was certainly original.

A film with two of my top 3 actors, that can't go wrong, I initially thought. It doesn't go wrong, but the story didn't really blow me away. In the first instance, of course, two excellent acting performances by DiCaprio who, just like in The wolf of Wall Street, could be his own enthusiastic self-confident self. Tom Hanks was not that bad, but with the exception of Road to Perdition (and Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers) I see him putting down a better rendition of a well-behaved (or somewhat goofy) character (examples are countless from Splash to Over You've got mail and the green mile). I've never seen an action actor in it. One we should certainly not forget is Christopher Walken, a strong acting performance as father Abagnale!

The story is captivating in the sense that it's interesting how Abagnale Jr. based on his dose of guts, he manages to deceive so many people with hot air stories. Excellent dialogues, good atmosphere creation, nice decor with the swinging sixties. Spielberg sure knows how to put together a movie. Also the funny note was not missing. The highlight for me was the typical scene at the airport with all the flight attendants. Beautiful scene! I also liked the scene in the beginning where he is a teacher.

As a minus I have to indicate the tempo. The film started out quite drawn out. We really have to wait for the moment that the boy takes the criminal path, at first a bit clumsy, later more and more cunning. Only then does the film really get interesting. It is an absurd film, too crazy for words and sometimes hard to believe that this is true (for 80% anyway). Sometimes reality trumps fiction: especially here!

The story itself is the strongest part of the film. A creative trickster who plays cat and mouse with the FBI and leads a great life through lies and fraud. The film also starts nicely with a beautiful title sequence, made with playful 2D animation. That gave me a sense of the film, although it was never fully redeemed afterwards.

Leonardo DiCaprio does a bit of overacting in the beginning, but otherwise he does a pretty good job as Frank Abagnale Jr. Tom Hanks does it less and seems on autopilot. It's not bad, he's a good actor. But his role is nowhere special and I also miss the real chemistry between Hanks and DiCaprio. Other big names like Christopher Walken and Martin Sheen are a bit lost. Amy Adams is also there early in her career. Although still here in a small role.

Catch me if you can is mainly an entertaining movie thanks to the story and Steven Spielberg can bring some momentum to it. But it never gets special.
