Boy Erased plot

"The truth cannot be converted."

Jared is the son of a pastor and comes from an American village. He is gay, which causes problems for his parents Nancy and Marshall. They put him on the spot: he has to go to the therapist Victor Sykes because he can be 'cured' from his sexual orientation. Jared constantly has doubts about his sexual feelings. That's because he doesn't rule out that his parents are right. That's why he starts conversion therapy.

Given the Nashville Manifesto, an unfortunately still extremely topical topic: gay therapy. Fundamentalist believers (of any religion)—who prefer to put their own mind on the back burner when it comes to religious matters—see homosexuality not as an orientation, but as a disease or a choice. So is a cure or change of orientation possible, is the subsequent fallacy. They believe that therapy is an effective means of achieving this.

Director Joel Edgerton delicately exposes this way of thinking and the associated practices in this poignant film, which is based on the autobiography of Garrard Conley. I fear that it will make little difference, because the people who desperately need to see this film will not dare to do so, I'm afraid. Yet it is an extremely useful signal, so that everyone remains alert.

A poignant true story in which teenager Jared [Lucas Hedges] confesses to his parents that he fantasizes about men. His deeply religious father and preacher Marshall [Russell Crowe] enlists the help of some outsiders who think they can solve the "problem" of homosexuality by having Jared follow the "Love In Action" program with Victor Sykes [directorEdgerton] for 12 days, so Jared can get rid of these thoughts. Initially, due to his sense of shame, Jared tries his best with the 'therapeutic exercises', but the repressive approach of the 'therapists' soon begins to disappoint him.

Hedges is sublime in the complex lead, and Edgerton is to be commended for portraying the parents not as caricatural religion fanatics, but as flesh-and-blood people. The director is also convincing as the manipulative program leader. Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea has an impressive supporting role as a 'convert'. A pretty nuanced look at a controversial outgrowth of Christian fundamentalism in the US.

Jared, disguising himself as gay, is sent to conversion therapy by his parents to "cure" his homosexuality. A retarded practice that falls somewhere between quackery and cult practices if you ask me. It is unbelievable that something like this is massively tolerated in American society. Religious conservatism is still strong and dictates a moral line to be followed that you should not deviate from if you do not want to be ostracized by the community.

Movies like Boy Erased are warmly welcomed throughout the LGBTQ movement, but this whole story is actually much older than today, we have to note that anti-gay feelings are also still strong. The story grabbed me, but not by the throat and therefore a 3*
