Based on the famous 1883 book "Treasure Island" by author Robert Louis Stevenson. However, the setting in this film was moved from the 19th century to the future, where ships sailed through the universe instead of the oceans. Ron Clements and John Musker, who were previously responsible for the classics The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, as well as Hercules, will direct. With a budget of $140 million, Treasure Planet was the most expensive animated film ever. The film was a combination of traditional 2D animation and modern 3D computer animation.

However, the result is less spectacular than previously thought. The combination of 2D with 3D animation looks pretty fake and the characters don't really come into their own. The robot BEN (voiced by Martin Short) in particular is quite annoying. Treasure Planet therefore does not contain the charm of the old Disney films and can be added to the list of Atlantis: The Lost Empire. The story itself is quite entertaining and the pace of the film is fast, but nowhere do you really feel like watching a Disney movie. The film became one of the biggest flops in Disney history. Partly because of this, the Disney head of animation decided not to produce any new 2D animated films beyond those already in production (Brother Bear and Home On The Range). A disappointing decision, as 2D animated films were the trademark of Disney, which achieved huge success in the 90s.

The least Disney classic I've seen so far. The concept of a flying ship with jet engines in a fantasy universe doesn't appeal to me at all, I also don't think I would have started the film if I had known this beforehand. But Disney has proven to me before that films that don't seem like anything to me at first can be surprisingly good. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this film.

I find the characters totally uninteresting and I lacked humor in the film. Visually it looks fine and the playing time doesn't feel infinite so a somewhat generous two and a half stars.

As the title suggests, a sort of space version of Treasure Island - but given the Disney character, the association with Pirates of the Caribbean is never far away. First and foremost, Treasure Planet looks very nice. That was a stroke of luck, after having seen gruesome contemporaries such as Home on the Range and Chicken Little. And while I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, the space setting is nicely done. The cyberpunk-esque combination of space travel and the pirate world is quite funny, and also has some Ghibli vibes to it.

However. Although it looked really good, I still found it to be mediocre as a film. Many of the characters, in particular, are deadly boring, Jim being arguably the most mind-numbing "hero" I've come across in a Disney movie. And that includes Chicken Little and Oliver & Company. That female captain was also a bit drowsy, luckily a few of the bad guys were still nice and Silver was entertaining too. In terms of story it could not keep me interested, despite the many different worlds that pass by and the beautiful visuals. Purely on the visual aspect, I was still able to enjoy myself somewhat, but certainly not enough for a pass.
