“Look. Look at your people, Moses. They are free.”

Nice animation film. The Prince of Egypt is a more serious film (based on the book of Exodus), and Moses' struggle to improve his people's lives is well captured in a 90-minute animated film. There is humor in the film and the music is sometimes very sweet (it would have been fine without music), but for the most part the makers know how to strike the right tone. With excellent voice actors such as Kilmer, Fiennes, Pfeiffer, Bullock, Goldblum and Glover (and Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Steve Martin and Martin Short). It's almost a shame that this isn't a live-action movie.

Difficult to assess. As a film adaptation of the biblical story of Moses, it still gets a pass, but it has a lot against it. Not only in the cinematic/artistic area (both the animation style and the songs are downright ugly) but also in terms of content, the Old Testament is simply not a comic book, it is not exactly people-friendly and it is certainly not child-friendly. A film with themes such as (sex) slavery and where babies are killed by bushes and then killing other babies by bushes out of revenge is not really what you would call a pleasant animation film for children. According to the Old Testament, slavery, infanticide and genocide are okay, and you can see that in this animation. I will never understand the people from Kijkwijzer either, I think there is a loose thread somewhere if you let a six-year-old watch this cartoon. Also because the Reli message is much too emphatic, which makes it almost indoctrinating. 1*
