Always nice to see a work by Emma De Swaef. This animation film / stop motion contains 3 stories, the first of which is clearly her own. Those woolly figures are just very well done. Not only the dolls themselves, but also the other details are very cleverly reconstructed. For example, think of the fireplace.

It is also especially the first story that is by far the best of the three. In terms of atmosphere, effect and story, it stands out on all sides. Nice and mysterious in which a family seems to have sold its soul to some kind of devil and pays the toll for this. The film had, among other things, some elements of, for example, The shining.

I found the other two films a lot less like most here. The second was not too bad with those rats, but unfortunately I couldn't do much with the third. It is a pity that the first part was not explored further, however, there was still a lot of room for a longer plot development.

To me, the news that Netflix might close its animation studio comes as a sad prospect. The streaming service is now just as enjoyable because of unexpected gems like 'The House' (2022). Nobody does anything with stop-motion anymore and suddenly a triptych is made with this time-consuming animation technique. The first story "And heard within, a lie is spun," is by far the strongest as a jet-black fairy tale about an ambitious architect and a Faustian deal with the devil. It looks wonderfully childish and innocent, while it is actually a surrealistic hell hole full of bizarre impressions. The second story "Then lost is truth that can't be won" is completely different in tone and style, but also has a bitter angle about an anthropomorphic rat who has to contend with a vermin infestation. But isn't he himself the scourge he wishes to fight?! Finally, a little air with 'Listen again and seek the sun' about anthropomorphic cats who form a hippie commune after an apocalyptic environmental disaster. A slight disappointment after two very strong stories, because the message is very obvious and it therefore lacks the nihilistic undertone.

Flanders got to know Emma De Swaef with the well-known stress man from De Lijn 'Hier nen euro' from the end of 2013, which still pops up here and there. With the film Ce Magnifique Gâteau she again delivered a 45-minute film. That story also consisted of 5 storylines. For a feature film such as The House, a combination of 3 stories was again used. They could also be separate short films, but the whole brings them more into the spotlight.

Animation with the well-known puppets that provide a very own style, even though stop-motion is more common. The stories also have a dark side. Hopefully we get to see more of this.
