Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole plot

"On his way to finding a legend...he will become one."

Soren is a young owl captivated by his father's grand tales of the 'Keepers of Ga'Hoole', a mythical group of winged heroes who fought a great battle to save all owls from the evil 'Perfect Warriors'. While Soren dreams of one day joining his heroes, his older brother Kludd scoffs at the idea. Kludd goes to great lengths to get more attention and love from their father than his younger brother. But Kludd's jealousy has dire consequences...both owlets fall from their nests and land right into the clutches of the Perfect Warriors. It's now up to Soren to make a courageous escape attempt with the help of other brave owlets. Together they fly over the sea and through the fog to find the Great Tree, the base of the legendary Keepers. They are Soren's only hope to defeat the Perfect Warriors and save the owl kingdom...

Beautifully animated animation film about owls. From an early age, the owlets hear stories of the legendary warriors of Ga'Hoole, who defeated the evil ones after a glorious battle. Owl brothers Soren and Kludd also know these stories, but after a kidnapping find out that not only are the evil Pure Ones real, but so are the Guardians of Ga'Hoole. The story is a some straightforward good versus evil combat, with obvious analogies to World War II - especially the Pure Ones' rambling about blood purity is not to be missed. Not too surprising in terms of story (although the owls do give it their own bit of charm), and a bit childish at times, but I had a great time with it. More fun than the average Disney, for example.

snyder?

I have to say that doing this movie for Snyders is a remarkable choice to make. Seems to feel most at home in CGI-sprayed action movies, but he does a bit of everything and maybe that includes a short trip to the animation world. Unfortunately, the end result is just not that exciting.

The main problem is that the wrong director is behind the wheel, who is technically skilled but not substantively. Little of the narrative really catches on. The jokes are of a pretty low level and way too easy, the characters can't even be separated after a while and the course itself can be called quite predictable. Ultimately, the film can be disappointing on one element, but then it has to score on other elements. That's what this movie can't really do.

The animation is good, but it's hard to deny. Beautifully detailed animals and a strong example of use of color that can certainly prevail in the final. Soundtrack is perhaps just a bit too present and a pity that the voice cast can't do much with the environment, otherwise it looks good aesthetically and that managed to keep me fascinated.

Other than that, I can hardly recommend the film. Think that kids aren't too surprised at the technical level and that many jokes and characters will barely catch on for them. I doubt very much that a little boy can remember, for example, which owl he liked so much in this film. But hey, maybe I'm saying the film unnecessarily too much. Anyway, I couldn't do much with it. I'd rather see Snyder in real fun.
