More than "against the background of", the Khmer Rouge intervention, because this Cambodian family is really torn apart by it.

A poignant drama presented in a beautiful, colorful animation film with the only downside being the too narrow variation in the portrayal of faces, eyes and facial expressions, but otherwise beautiful drawings of plantations, clouds, nature...

A pleasant and substantive viewing piece. Not a masterpiece.

Solid and interesting animation film about the Khmer Rouge in which we see the story of a family being torn apart. Except for Jolie's First They Killed My Father (2017) or The Killing Fields (1984) not very familiar with Pot's regime, not even at school, by the way. The slave camps, the propaganda machine and the mass murders are a bitter déjà vu from which humanity does not learn, as we know today.

The story is personally related to the testimonies of the director's mother. Chou and her family have to leave their home and leave for a long march to the labor camp. On the way, they lose their son. The harsh living conditions of the regime are frequently discussed, physical violence not explicit, but suggestive with flashes of light (or sounds) for executions. The hard life based on the propaganda machine, slavery, hunger and abuse is well depicted.

Nature with its beautiful bright colors is also strongly featured in the film and is beautifully reflected against the horror. It had something of a Terrence Malick. Do tries to tell a nuanced story about what happened from the belly of the event. Funan is a captivating view without many political or historical happenings. It tells a story about how a population tried to survive in this hell.

Sober, hand-drawn historical drama set in Cambodia in 1975, follows a family among the 1.5 million people who are coerced by Angkar, a branch of the Khmer Rouge, into a long march to an unknown destination. Khunon [Louis Garrell] and Chou [Bérénice Bejo] hope to get help from cousin Sok [Thierry Jahn], but he has an unpleasant surprise in store for his family. To make matters worse, they lose sight of two family members. The story concerns their efforts to track down the missing relatives under the eye of the ruthless fanatical supporters of the Khmer Rouge. The story is fascinating, but the somewhat simplistic animation keeps you too far away, so that the emotional impact is limited.
