Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood plot

"A coming of age story.... the way only Richard Linklater could tell it."

In the run-up to the first moon landing in the summer of 1969, a child is fascinated by space life. His big dream is to leave his ordinary life behind and prepare for a space trip to the moon.

Excellent film about a boy living in Houston at the time of the first moon landing in 1969. The entire family life and growing up in the late 1960s is beautifully portrayed. A wonderfully nostalgic tone in which the scenes are talked together by a retrospective voice-over by a subdued Jack Black. The animation style (previously used by Richard Linklater) looks nice.

Sympathetic, nostalgia-drenched ode to the 1960s, in particular to the period leading up to the first moon landing in the summer of 1969. The film has a strong autobiographical feel and that is immediately the biggest stumbling block, since director Richard Linklater goes so far in showing all kinds of details from the period that there is hardly any plot. The film is mainly a succession of striking, often loving observations, with appropriately ironic commentary by Jack Black.

You know how memory works. Even if he was asleep, he'll still think he saw it all.

A great portrait of a bygone era, this 'Apollo 10½: A Space Age Childhood'. The late 1960s was a unique moment in history, when everything seemed possible, everything was new, technology really pushed boundaries. Linklater shows, however, that even then the world was on fire - ecological disaster was declared, a bloody war was underway, inequality and racism were rampant as never before - but adults lived in a carefree prosperity and the youth grew up with an almost unimaginable positivism . Everything was possible – even simulating your own moon landing based on your own imagination.

It is wonderful how Linklater pays homage through fantasy to the classics with which he was raised, the fiction of the smallest screen in the living room from which he got the mustard for his later career... Disarming, intriguing but above all hilarious: a compelling and heartwarming trip through a turning point in human history, seen from a – well – very 'atypical' point of view. Long live the look of the child, that can see what so many often miss!

3.75*
