"When our world ended their mission began."

When rag doll 9 (Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All human life has disappeared, but by chance he finds a small community of conspecifics who are hiding from the terrible machines that roam the earth. These machines are trying to wipe out everything and everyone, because they want to have complete control and power over the world. 9 manages - despite being the rookie of the group - to convince his peers that hiding is no solution. They must strike back if they are to survive. What they will soon learn is that the future of their civilization depends on themselves...

Just saw it for the first time...

Dark and ominous... in terms of animation and music...

Highly recommended.. 4 stars

I like good animations and hoped this one would fall under that as well. But the content is so meager and soulless that despite the short duration it became annoying to watch, not at all fascinating, moreover the ending became very predictable at a certain point, and then you still have almost half an hour to go.

Maybe as a short it was a very nice one, but for a full-length film it lacks quite a bit of content. It also falters quite a bit in terms of tempo, so you can see that there are just holes in the film that are filled with boring stretched parts. The atmosphere just doesn't get off the ground, it all remains dark, empty and... boring. With some clichés they try to add emotion, but as far as I'm concerned, that fails. The animation design may have been nice on paper, but that alone isn't enough to make a good movie. A film that is interesting neither for children nor for adults. A meager 1.5*

A film like Coraline (2009), coincidentally (?) from the same year, shows how an animation with rag dolls should be done. 9 comes off very poor in comparison.

Successful and visually especially very attractive snack, this animation film of barely 70 minutes. That playing time was also nice, in the wrong hands they would have wanted to stretch this to a film of more than two hours, but it is precisely that compact and simple that makes 9 strong. At the script level there is nothing to get you very excited about, but the style is strong and visually very nice things are created, especially around the machines. It's dark, but not too dark. In that respect, it's fine for parents who want to present their offspring a most charming and exciting film and who are tired of yet another animation film of the caliber 'Look, this fat hippo can sing'.

3.5 stars.
