Troy plot

"For passion. For honor. For destiny. For victory. For love."

It is 1193 BC. Paris, the prince of Troy, falls in love with Helena, queen of Sparta, and Helena goes with him to Troy, without her husband -king Menelaus- knowing. This causes both kingdoms to go to war with each other. There is bloody fighting around the city of Troy. Achilles was the greatest hero of the Greeks, while Hector, the eldest son of the king of Troy, was the hope of the inhabitants of his city.

There is a horse on the beach... yes yes a horse on the beach...

A bit of a shame that Troy is not recognized as a masterpiece here. I thought it was very strong, especially the director's cut. Mythology lends itself perfectly to film, because of the enormous drama that radiate from the characters. I certainly find it positive that no god is shown physically; furthermore, they are indeed present on the battlefield, in the sense that they determine the fate of Achilles and Troy by the choices that are made. For example, it is hinted more than once that Achilles has incurred the wrath of Apollo by beheading his statue . An act by which Achilles is irrevocably doomed. In the Iliad itself, the underlying competition of the gods is more apparent, but I didn't feel that this was completely forgotten in the film.

Film knows one beautiful scene after another under a clear blue sea sky. The duel Hector-Achilles is perfectly choreographed and the first attack on Troy is damn beautiful. Achilles (a Brad Pitt who looks very gay) is by far the most interesting character, especially in relation to Agamemnon. How both would prefer to kill each other, but are so dependent on each other. One for eternal fame, the other for victory. Superb element.

Timeless story by Petersen captured in an extremely successful film, at least for me. Ok, he sometimes makes fun of the Iliad, but I think the essence has been captured and that's what matters. A nice example of how it should be done: not only blood and battles, but also the entire cascade of choices and events surrounding it.

“You gave me peace in a lifetime of war.”

The strange thing about Troy is that the film lasts two and a half hours, but still feels rushed. Especially the beginning and the end are rushed through. That while there is time in the middle section for some great battles and one-on-one brawls. The story of Troy and the Greeks is well known, and Troy tries to put his own spin on it. That doesn't really bother me.

That's because of the brilliant cinematography, the locations, the cool action scenes and the actors. Especially Pitt, Bana, Byrne, Bean and O'Toole are fantastic. Bloom is terrible and Kruger comes off badly. But that, for example, the romantic subplot between Pitt and Byrne works is a great compliment to both actors. It's even one of the better storylines. But Troy is generally not very deep and above all an action-packed spectacle. Not much wrong with that either.

Although I find the Greek mythologies very interesting, I had never seen this film until now because my expectations were very low. Those expectations were unfortunately fulfilled, because this is a monstrosity of a movie. In the first place because of the soundtrack in which we always hear a wailing lady at the dramatic moments that cause the film to get bogged down in melodrama.

Also, the casting is far from ideal. Bloom is a lightweight, nice for Bean that his character survives the movie once, but I don't see an Odysseus in him and I don't see Achilles in Pitt at all, who relies more on smooth roles like in Fight Club , Ocean's Eleven and Snatch, but falls short for more serious roles. Diane Kruger is a beautiful lady, but no more than that, while Helena is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world. It's not all, only Bana is still a bit like Hector.

The action is otherwise mediocre, or we zoom in far too much to see anything or we see a lot of men in heels where it is hardly clear who belongs to which party. The film does not faithfully follow the story of Homeros' Iliad witness the premature death of Ajax and Menelaos, which does not happen at all with Homeros. But for a film version, these kinds of adaptations are often unavoidable and in this case they were not very disturbing.

Nevertheless, the Ilias deserves a much better film adaptation. 0.5*.
