I can completely agree with my predecessor. Quite over-the-top, but that is partly due to overacting. Although I have to say that they sometimes go too far with the costumes and sets. For example, at the excavation of Genghis Khan all the archaeologists have to wear appropriate helmets while the Chinese helpers have to wear those Asian straw hats. I don't think anyone in those scenes is not wearing a head covering.
Furthermore, I found Fu Manchu's torture method of tying someone under a bell that continuously rings hilarious.
Karloff is still reasonably convincing as Fu Manchu, with the advantage that it was shot in black and white. Christopher Lee had to wear a lot of make-up in his role, which made it very cheesy.
Partly due to the running time, I was not bored for a second and this somewhat dated adventure film provides excellent entertainment.

Fu Manchu strives for world domination. The oriental with scientific knowledge also wants to exterminate the white race. He sees himself as the legitimate successor or actually as the intended reincarnation of Genghis Khan. To do this, he needs the mask and the sword of the Mongol ruler. A group of British scientists finds the items first. This means that a confrontation is inevitable.
The Mask of Fu Manchu is considered the best, most brutal and most sadistic of all Manchu film adaptations. I have little knowledge of Fu Manchu, so those qualifications could certainly apply. Boris Karloff is certainly impressive as the evil Fu Manchu. It is only because the title role indicates Karloff as Manchu that he is hardly recognizable. It seems that the man had to sit in the make-up chair for two and a half hours every day before the metamorphosis was complete.
There is plenty of brutality and sadistic actions, although the modern viewer may shrug their shoulders at the visual representation of it. Still, I found the scene impressive in which Myrna Loy, who plays the daughter of Manchu, licks the wounds of her lover who has just been whipped vigorously. If that isn't pure sadomasochism... The amount of violence is considerable, by the way. The mental and physical torture is in the air.
The setting in the mystical East of the world is atmospheric. The film has a somewhat mysterious and dark atmosphere, which is pleasant. The acting is good and the variation in events is great. Here and there some poor effects. These are part and parcel of a film from the thirties and, in my opinion, increase the viewing pleasure. The Mask of Fu Manchu is above all an amusing film.
