Difficult product, I must say. Starts as a serious political film, then degenerates into a romantic melodrama, and ends as an exciting and atmospheric adventure film with first quite impressive war scenes and then beautiful shots of a jungle and a tropical rain shower. William Holden plays the central role excellently as usual, not surprisingly since he had the patent on this kind of opportunistic charmers in those years ("I have no politics, no morals. There's nothing inside of me but me. That me can break all the laws, but it can't betray a friend. Damn you for asking!"), but even during the physically demanding shots in the jungle he looks tight and robust (while he was heavily on the bottle during the shooting period - but then again, when you're touring the jungle for days on end, a hungover appearance is of course not that noticeable). Capucine looks far too moody almost all the time, Tetsurô Tamba (as the rebel leader Ng) has a beautiful face with which he can look sufficiently noble, and Susannah York has the rather thankless role of the romantic young girl who falls for the wrong cynic. And a huge plus is of course the beautiful camera work of Freddie Young (three-time Oscar winner for David Lean).
There's a very respectable movie hidden somewhere inside this film, but the latter refuses to come out in the open. Then again, three movies for the price of one isn't bad either, and I was still captivated throughout the entire running time. And at least the film has the courage to (a) not avert Capucine's execution at the very last moment and (b) not let Holden end up in York's arms, compliments for that.

Excellent film in which the people of Malaysia want independence. A film about a friendship that is tested by political influences. Recorded in Malaysia which definitely benefits the authenticity. Entertaining and a number of grand scenes.
