1235 AD. Season Of The Witch opens with the execution of three women found guilty of witchcraft. A priest asks the women again if they have made a pact with the devil; a confession might save their souls. Their soul, not their body! The first woman is clearly scared and immediately confesses that she is a witch. The second woman is a little calmer, she confesses that she made the ointment, but swears it wasn't witchcraft. The last woman shows no fear and says to the priest:

Priest, you're gonna burn in hell!

I had a lot of fun with this adventure film. Only now have I realized that hardly any films have been made about the witch hunts in Central and Western Europe. Yes, The Crucible, but that takes place in North America, The Witchfinder General.. Very unfortunate, yet a black page in history.

"We're going to need more holy water."

Another strong Fantasy/Horror for once.

One of Nicolas Cage's better roles. Ron Perlman was good here too. And a very nice cameo from Christopher Lee one of my personal favorite actors, he kind of looks like The Elephant Man with that hump.

Season of the Witch tells the story of two Crusaders who no longer want to fight because they killed too many innocents. Once they have returned to their home country, they are told that the plague has broken out en masse. This would have been proclaimed by a witch. The cardinal will forgive their desertion if they, together with a master of arms and a priest, take the Witch to an abbey where she will be tried. However, he doubts whether the girl in question is really a Witch. A strong story, sometimes not at all historically correct, but yes it is Fantasy so it doesn't matter, author's freedom.

The movie starts off right right away. The opening scene where women accused of Witchcraft are hanged - "Priest, you're gonna burn in hell!" - immediately sets a good mood. Visually the film is good, good cinematography. The costumes and makeup look very good. The plague-covered actors and corpses also look impressive. A bit of a shame about the lousy CGI at times, especially at the end. Some nice gruesome images and with that this Fantasy Horror is complete, the story here is better than usual with such films (Van Helsing cough).

All in all, a successful film.

-Actors 7/10

-Story 9/10

-Cinematography 8/10

-Effects 3/10

-Makeup 9/10

-Overall 8/10

A nice plot with adequate characters, even if they are played by Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, "so you suspect Season of the witch will not be an exercise in understatement" as Roger Ebert aptly points out. Indeed, solid action, plenty of swords swinging, and acting consisting of meaningful glances at tired one-liners, but unfortunately the film collapses once the group arrives at the monastery, and the CGI junk from the last ten minutes sucks every bit of life out of the movie (and every bit of interest out of this viewer). And why all those dark and clear-coloured shots – or do the director and his cameraman sometimes think that that is the meaning of the term the Dark Ages?
