A film that moves along at a leisurely pace and goes on and on without making you bored, without keeping you on the edge of your seat and without being annoyed. Then you walk out of the room, you blink and you have already forgotten him.

When his father [Travis Fimmel] is seriously injured after a scuffle, it's up to Charley [Charlie Plummer] to provide an income. He finds a job as an assistant to Del [Steve Buscemi], a horse trainer who sees and treats his horses as commodities and unceremoniously sends them to slaughter when they are no longer worth anything. Charley becomes attached to Lean On Pete, one of the racehorses that appears to be at the end of his career.

It is difficult to sympathize with Charley, who mainly presents himself as an opportunist and a profiteer and whose 'friendship' with the horse of the title is very one-sided. There is absolutely no chemistry between horse and protagonist! Director Andrew Haigh's screenplay apparently expects Charley's difficult childhood to be enough reason to arouse our sympathy and it also contains some less than believable moments. Plummer's monotone performance doesn't help either. Only Steve Buscemi breathes life into the film, but otherwise this is not very uplifting.

Beautiful film (based on the book of the same name by Willy Vlautin) about a 15-year-old boy who grows up in a raw and neglectful social environment in the rugged northwest of the United States. A fine and convincing role by Charlie Plummer as a sensitive, introverted and lonely young adolescent, who finds comfort in contact with a discarded racehorse. A nice supporting role, too, from veteran Steve Buscemi as a businesslike and somewhat indifferent horse trainer. An important role is played by the social underclass, in which the main character grows up and has to keep his head above water, against the backdrop of the beautiful, desolate landscape of Oregon. Although the roller coaster of events seems a bit forced to me at a certain point and almost goes off the rails, in the end the feeling that prevails is that of having seen an intimate and moving coming-of-age portrait, in which the pitfall of melodrama/sentimentality, which is somewhat often lurks, has been skillfully avoided.
