A Game of Death plot

During World War II, writer Don Rainsford is stranded on a remote island with brother and sister Robert and Ellen Trowbridge. They are at the mercy of the mad Nazi Erich Krieger, who is master of the island. Sportsman as he is, Krieger gives the three castaways an hour's head start before hunting them like animals.

This starts off as practically a shot-for-shot remake of The most dangerous game (1932), including some duplicate shots when the ship goes awry at the beginning, the same tapestry lining the stairs, nearly identical indoor sets, shots of jungle vegetation moving aside from the camera depicting the perspective of the escapees, and Noble Johnson even in the exact same role. The film has a more extensive interlude because the brother's character is given more to do, but after that the plot faithfully follows the structure of the earlier film, although the villain is now no longer a Russian but a Nazi. There's not much wrong with the pacing, and the director has more than earned his spurs in the thriller-horror genre, but with this cast he just can't do much, because John Loder is no Joel McCrea and Edgar Barrier doesn't measure up to the theatrical Leslie Banks. Okay, Audrey Long looks attractive, and Gene Roth (here Gene Stutenroth) is effective as Kreiger's creepy right-hand man, but that's where the positives end. No reason to bother with this film as long as the extremely entertaining original is available.
