I always find Kurosawa's contemporary films a bit catchier and better than such an 'ordinary' samurai film, but every now and then a film with the wise Mifune and nine somewhat dumb samurai can still be fun. He opens a whole box of tricks in his fight against injustice. The fights looked great again, but I'm never really captivated by this genre.

My 9th Kurosawa and also after this 'Tsubaki Sanjûrô' we will continue happily. Another masterful film from the Japanese director. Beautiful blu-ray Criterion release, where visually Kurosawa conjures up a wonderful experience on the screen on the beautiful 2.35:1 widescreen. Very nice.

Toshirô Mifune is a hero. Mighty figure. The comic aspect works very well in this print; Mifune with his brilliant one-liners always, that guy in the closet, you name it. It fits nicely between the beautiful nature images, the woods, the beautiful flowing stream and the settings that provide a very pleasant atmosphere. Technically fine.. strong elaboration of a not too complicated story.

Impressive in action. The ending scene is really amazing and the action in between is also very good. Mifune who is afraid of nothing and no one. What a cool figure. Yes, I really enjoyed this picture.

Reasonable film with a good pace and again a fine Mifune that is certainly enjoyable in the beginning, but nothing really special. Eventually the film starts to drag a bit because there is not much more to tell. Each scene becomes a bit of a repetition of what has already been said. It all remains at a good level, but a good 90 minutes in a row is still too long. Visually fine with nice clean shots. Rounded up 3.5*.
