The World Is Not Enough plot

"As the countdown begins for the new millennium there is still one number you can always count on."

Sir Robert King is a rich man, as he owns oil fields in Azerbaijan, and is working on a new project: the construction of a new oil artery to the west. However, he is murdered during a visit to M at MI6 headquarters in London. James Bond tries to warn Sir King but he is too late. During this attempt he is shot at by a lady unknown to him. With the help of M, James finds out that this mysterious lady is employed by Renard, a ruthless terrorist. Sir King's daughter, Elektra, determined to complete the new pipeline, her father's life's work, turns out to have been kidnapped by Renard once. However, Sir King, partly on M's advice, never paid the ransom. M and James believe that Elektra's life is in danger and M sends James, armed with Q's latest gadgets, to Azerbaijan to protect Elektra and find out who killed her father.

This film was my first introduction to the Bond films. After all these years, it has been revised a few times, so the film no longer holds any secrets for me. I have to say that this is quite a pleasant film and it will stay with me mainly because of the farewell of Desmond Llewelyn as 'Q'. Memorable scene and a farewell to a great actor in the franchise.

The film opens strongly with a nice chase on the Thames and the subsequent plot is full of surprising twists. Sophie Marceau is the absolute star of this film, a complex character she portrays superbly. Brosnan is again sprinkling with tasty one-liners, although one comes out better than the other. Furthermore, everything Bond makes is present: beautiful locations, gadgets and a chase in the snow.

A very critical note: Denise Richards can compete with Grace Jones from 'a View to a Kill' for the worst female acting performance.

Half a raise, after GoldenEye Brosnan's best Bond film.

3.5*

Good film in which a doomed terrorist targets an oil pipeline. This 19th James Bond film has all the ingredients you can expect. This may make the film predictable, but it's entertaining from start to finish. More than enough action and also quite spectacular. Nice one-liners and Desmond Llewelyn leaves the stage in a beautiful way.

The last Bond film starring the elderly Llewelyn as Q, who died in a car accident. In any case, his farewell was done in good spirits. For the rest, this film is unfortunately not much. A muddled plot, an antagonist who looks like a heroin junkie, an antagonist who is incredibly full of herself and of course Richards who is completely unbelievable as a doctor of nuclear physics. Only Marceau had something. The action is standard, not very startling. As is often the case with these kinds of films, the music is a bit too emphatic. Ultimately slightly less than the predecessor, but not enough to be reflected in my numerical rating: 1*.
